The foundation of Birrabang Recycling was born from years of first-hand experience across the Australian waste management sector. Throughout our executive team’s careers, one recurring issue stood out: massive volumes of recoverable materials were being buried in landfill or burned in waste-to-energy facilities.
Nowhere was this problem more glaring than at council tip sites, transfer stations, and illegal dumping clean-ups across Western Australia. Everywhere we looked, there were endless, towering piles of waste mattresses. And everywhere we went, we heard the exact same tired response: "You simply cannot recycle mattresses effectively, safely, or efficiently. It can't be done"
That answer didn't sit well with us.
Driven by the belief that there had to be a better way for our environment, our journey began. We dedicated countless hours to researching existing methods, looking at small-scale attempts, and analyzing the sheer volume of mattress waste flowing through the Australian economy. What we found was a critical gap—there was no commercially viable, comprehensive resource recovery system in Australia capable of handling the nation's mattress waste at scale.
Refusing to accept the status quo, we set out to build the solution ourselves.
We partnered with leading local and international engineering and manufacturing teams to pioneer, design, and construct our own proprietary, purpose-built processing line. Following months of late nights, relentless testing, and hard work, we turned a vision into reality.
Today, Birrabang Recycling is proud to be Australia’s first fully automated, Indigenous-owned circular economy mattress recycler.
By bridging the gap between industry necessity and environmental stewardship, we proved that what was once called "impossible" can indeed be done. We are proud to lead the nation in transforming a problematic waste stream into valuable, secondary commodities—protecting Country, empowering communities and building a truly circular future.
